SEO Mistakes Dental Websites Make

Most dental practice websites look great but are invisible on Google. Here are the 5 most common SEO issues we find — and how to fix them.

Most dental practices invest thousands in a beautiful website — then wonder why nobody finds it on Google. The problem isn't the design. It's the SEO.

After auditing hundreds of dental websites, we see the same five mistakes over and over. Here's what they are and what to do about them.

1. Missing or Duplicate Meta Descriptions

Every page on your site should have a unique meta description — the short text that shows up under your link in Google results. Most dental sites either have no meta descriptions at all, or use the same generic one on every page.

Why it matters: Without a compelling meta description, Google either writes one for you (usually poorly) or shows a random snippet from your page. Either way, fewer people click.

The fix: Write a unique 120-160 character description for each page. Include your location and a call to action. Example: "Family dentistry in Portland, OR. Accepting new patients — book your appointment today."

2. No H1 Tag or Multiple H1 Tags

Your H1 tag is the main heading on each page. Google uses it to understand what the page is about. We frequently find dental sites with either no H1 at all (the heading looks like an H1 but is actually styled text) or multiple H1s fighting for attention.

Why it matters: A clear H1 tells Google exactly what each page covers. "Dental Implants in [City]" is far better than a generic "Welcome to Our Practice."

The fix: Every page gets exactly one H1 that describes its content and includes your target keyword.

3. Images Without Alt Text

Dental websites are image-heavy — photos of the office, the team, before-and-after shots. But most of those images have no alt text, which means Google can't "see" them.

Why it matters: Alt text helps Google understand your images, which helps you show up in image search. It's also required for accessibility.

The fix: Add descriptive alt text to every image. Instead of "IMG_4521.jpg", use "Modern dental operatory at Smith Family Dental in Portland, OR."

4. Missing Schema Markup

Schema markup (specifically LocalBusiness schema) tells Google structured information about your practice — name, address, phone number, hours, services. Without it, you're leaving local search rankings on the table.

Why it matters: Sites with proper schema markup are more likely to show up in the Google Maps pack and rich results, which is where most dental searches lead.

The fix: Add LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema to your homepage with your complete practice information. Add FAQ schema to your most common questions page.

5. Slow Page Speed

A beautiful website with large uncompressed images and heavy animations might look great on your desktop, but it loads slowly on the phone your potential patient is using to search "dentist near me."

Why it matters: Google uses page speed as a ranking factor, especially on mobile. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, you're losing both rankings and patients.

The fix: Compress images, enable lazy loading, and remove unnecessary scripts. Aim for a PageSpeed score of 90+ on mobile.
